Fail…

I duped a friend into helping me with a DIY theater screen project. We needed to make a frame for the screen and hang it up on the wall in the “sanctuary” of the church building we have moved to. Trouble is, this screen is 14ft tall x 28ft wide and after the PVC frame was created it weighed about 300lbs. The PVC continually flexed just enough to laugh in our faces and call us ninnies.

It simply proved to be too much for (two men <—up for debate.) We worked on it until 11pm last night before we finally gave up…spirits broken. We’ll try again today or tomorrow with more people and hopefully have some success. Check out the time-lapse video.

Everybody needs at least a little fail every now and then.

Makes life more interesting, doesn’t it?

    Strengthens resolve, I say.

FAIL, ha ha ha. For a second there I thought you had it. Why does Andrew not have any heavy equipment designed for this kind of work?

    Nice try, Ryan.

    Not to sound “over-quote-y,” but:

“The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough.” ~ Randy Pausch

It will come together. Let me know if I can help.

The church looks great. This is our first glimpse.

Oh man, I remember those days. A couple of years ago we built our own building on a budget which meant that I, as Media Director, got stuck hanging the lights, projector and screens. Actually for me, the screens weren’t near as bad as hanging the projectors 35 feet in the air. To this day I still make sure I don’t walk under them when I visit.

Oh man, such a bummer. I feel physically and mentally exhausted after watching that. I agree with the other commenter that said this will build character somehow!

For a minute there it looked like you had it.
Watching someone sit in the pew and look at it after it’d been hung I could almost feel the defeat.
A few more hands helping can only improve the results!

I liked the part where you were just standing in the right corner, pondering the problem. You’ll get it I’m sure.

I’ve never been to Ohio, but if I ever do get up that way I want to come to your church-looks really nice!

I thought you almost had it! I was wrong… I was nervous watching you two climbing on the ladders trying to figure this whole thing out. It was a valiant effort.

I feel guilty for finding the video so entertaining. It must have been terribly frustrating.

I have alwyas love, love, loved this quote:

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, I’ve lost more than 300 games, and 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. Throughout my life and career I’ve failed, and failed, and failed again. And that’s why I succeed. - Michael Jordan

As long as we are DOING we are succeeding. You are succeeding Ryan. Keep failing, for in doing so you are a brillant success.

Cool video! Loved watching the screen go up…that thing is HUGE! Reminds me of a banner I helped someone put up a while back. It was not easy and that thing was only 6′x10′…….what a pain in the bum! Hope it goes better the next try. :)

More men! More ladders! This is going to make my husband feel so much better about every home improvement project he’s done. Too bad we don’t live closer, I’d send him over to help. Thanks for encouraging others with your failure. :)
