My tattoo session that was scheduled for yesterday was postponed until Friday to draw something up differently. Boo. I was all psyched up and got a whole bunch of work done early in the morning so that I could be freed up later in the afternoon.
Having some time to drive around in the snow was fun…it’s always so…soothing for some reason. Everything just has that perfect blanket on it and you can’t see the imperfections of the man-made.
Since I was a sad panda, I decided to take a drive over to Jungle Jim’s which is always exciting for a foodie dweeb like myself. Allison has probably only been to the grocery store with me a dozen times in our near 6 years of marriage. It might have to do with the fact that I cannot go to the grocery store without visiting each and every isle. What if I miss something??
Upon perusing the candy area, I found something that I haven’t seen in years. VALOMILK.
I bought several packages, which still look just as vintage as they did nearly 20 years ago when I last had them. I remember getting a package of these liquid marshmallow cups at a small candy store in Hershey Pennsylvania. They taste just as I remember.
What’s a classic food/drink/candy that you remember loving from when you were little?

Verner’s Gingerale. It is the only ginerale I drink and I now have to order it special from a vintage pop website.

We sold Valomilk at a store I used to work at. People went crazy for them.
I can’t remember the name of them bere there used to be this little package of round sprinkle like candy that would come with a teeny tiny animal figurine. I wish I knew what they were called so I could try to find them again.

Aww – Bummer about that tattoo! I know how it feels to be excited about getting some ink! LOL!
{reply}
Oh man, I used to love those wax soda bottles that had the juice inside. It sounds so gross to me now though!
{reply}
i have always been a fan of bottle caps. i can still find them at wal-mart and target
i have never heard of valomilk. curious if it is a regional candy…hmmm
{reply}
wax soda bottles…I forgot about those.
{reply}
Big League Chew gum… my great-aunt hated it because I would act like I really had a dip in!
{reply}
Magic Middle Cookies!
{reply}
Valomilk sounds a lot like Mallow-cups. They are awesome.
I always liked the “dots”. I don’t know what else to call them. We got them at the Back 40 Junction in Indiana. They were basically just small colored sugar drops on white paper. But they were great!
{reply}
Hate them now but then they were summer…..those plastic sticks of syrup that you freeze….blue was my favorite…
{reply}
Big Hunks… oh man they were awesome. I am sure they are still around but I haven’t have one in forever!!
{reply}
Sixlets! I can only find them at Halloween now.
{reply}
Poprocks!!
{reply}
Milk Duds, or Banana Fudge Bombs-the huge ice cream bombs that you have to eat fast before it all melts off the stick.
Also Spree, a coated Sweet Tart-type candy.
{reply}
Kit Kat bars. I don’t know if it’s the candy or the memories that come with them.
{reply}
I liked candy cigarettes and Fun Dips!
{reply}
Cherry Clans. You could get a box for a quarter at Bob Evans. http://www.inthe80s.com/food/cherryclans0.shtml
A little culturally insensitive, but very good!
{reply}
Remember Violet Crumble? Honeycomb type candy with milk chocolate covering? I have never heard of Valomilk. Weird. How can driving in the snow be soothing? I am petrified! Hands gripping tightly, stiff arms and sitting straight as an arrow. Wish I had your confidence.
{reply}
chocolate “ice cubes
{reply}
LOL, such a contradicting post… yummy candy and gross eyeballs! EW. Glad I was done eating when I saw the pic.
I remember those candies….sooooo melty and gooood!
{reply}
Pop Rocks. I used to love them.
{reply}
Circus peanuts. Those old ugly orange peanut in a shell looking candies. I loved them. Although I still grab a package of them at Cracker Barrell from time to time. YUM!
{reply}
Mallow Cups! Very hard to find in the south but growing up in Ohio I used to love them! I used to trade my sisters for all of theirs on Halloween.
{reply}
fun dips, mambas, chocolate covered gummy bears.
{reply}
My grandpa owned a corner store in Price Hill, so I had an endless supply of candy. All I had to do was go in and give him “the” look and say that one magic word…”grandpa.” Worked every time
My FAVORITE candy were the little “ice cream cones” with the marshmallow “ice cream” on top. Anyone remember those? I could really go for some right now!

A treat from Germany where my uncle was stationed, they were milk chocolate/white chocolate eggs that were hollow inside and contained a toy. My dad went on a business trip to Germany about two years ago and brought back a few carton fulls for my kids, or were they for me (I know I gave the kids the toy but I’m not saying who ate most of the chocolate.) They taste just as I remembered and next time someone I know goes to Germany they will bring me more back (if that ever happens again).
{reply}
Green River soda! It’s “before my time” but a lot of the 50′s diners in Chicago still served it while I was growing up. No way I’m finding it out here in the middle of nowhere South Dakota.
{reply}
Moonpies. I used to love going into gas stations on car trips, because sometimes they’d have moonpies, and my mom would buy one for me and my brother.
What it is about marshmallow and childhood that goes so well together?
{reply}
Mmmmm….Sixlets!! But Debbie….they ARE available year round. I’ll send you some if you’d like!
Bummer on the tattoo postponement. And I’m incredibly envious of your trips to Jungle Jims….*sigh*
{reply}
Kim, you are too sweet to offer to send me Sixlets! Thanks – I may take you up on it one day.
{reply}
MoonPies. They were my Pappaw’s favorite treat and I borrowed them from him. I still see them around from time to time, and think of him each and every time.

Hello all
It would have to be Razzles! Candy that is a gum!
Love it!

Pixie Stix. My daughter uses them to stay energized for band trips. I swear they are kiddie cocaine…
Also, I love See’s candies, especially the victoria english toffee…

Sunday after church we would stop at the grocery store and mom would pick up a package of Archway Raspberry filled cookies with whatever else she needed & we would eat them with dad on the way home. Wonderfully soft and yummy!!
I picked up a package a few years ago… completely disgusting, I can’t believe we ate them.
{reply}
For me it’s Bit-O-Honey. Man I loved those. And the little peanut butter crispy sticks everyone gave out at Halloween. I’d trade my chocolates for either of those every time. They were just so great.
{reply}
I was and still am in love with Jones Soda, I just love the different photos and sayings on all the bottles! Yum! I loved Pixie Stix, Pop Rocks, Smarties and Squeeze Pops, you know the “liquid sucker?” So good and yet so bad for your teeth
Sometimes I go back and eat them just so I can reminisce about my childhood.
{reply}
I love your blogs… You come up with the greatest topics!! I’ve never heard of a Valomilk… I bet my kids would love it… Do you remember razzle candy/gum? We use to love those when I was little. I have to agree with Nikki above, Pop Rocks were awesome!!
How’s Ava doing with the potty process? That was very sweet…
{reply}
necco wafers and zero bars- yum!!
{reply}
I’ve never heard of that candy before!
Mine has to be sixlet candies, when they used to come in the little plastic containers.
{reply}
I always loved Tang when I was a kid. I haven’t had it in so long because I’m afraid it would gross me out now and ruin all my memories of it.
{reply}
are those puffer fish? i am so weirded out by their eyes!! i should follow the link i guess…
never tried valomilk…now you have me all curious.
{reply}
Charlston Chew… ahh memories!
{reply}
Fun Dips and Pixie Stix. Had them at the Little League ball diamond.
{reply}
Aero bars — chocolate bars with little air pockets in them. I last saw them about three years ago on sale at a Celtic store in the city where I went to college …
{reply}
I really liked Charleston Chews.
All three flavors were good.
{reply}
Orange and Grape Crush and the box of Ding Dongs that were individually wrapped in foil… I think they taste better.
{reply}
When I was little, my grandma used to dress me up and take me downtown to Shillito’s and get me a bag of Swedish Fish at their candy/nut counter. I thought they were the yummiest thing I had ever had! And, Ryan… ewwww on the sheep/goat heads (?) Glad my kiddos weren’t looking!
{reply}
Pennsylvania represent!
I hate to say it … but not only do we have the best sports teams around, but we also have the best Amish, and the best chocolate.
{reply}
We saw Jungle Jim’s on Food Network and I remember saying to my husband, “If we ever go there, I’m going to have to spend hours in that store!”
I can’t remember anything specific from my childhood that isn’t still around. My brothers and I would hike about 1/2 mile through the woods to get to 7-11 and we would buy Gobstoppers and Sprees and then pour them into a red plastic cup! YUM!
{reply}
I just watched a show on Food Network about the guy who is bringing back Valomilk! I wanted to try one instantly but I can’t find any in Nashville. Did you try it?
{reply}
Ooooh…we moved away from Cincinnati almost five years ago and I am pretty sure that Jungle Jim’s is what I miss most. Although the Cincy Vineyard probably takes a close second.
I remember eating Chinese rice candy when I was a kid. You know, in the little green and orange box? Okay, maybe nobody else knows. The candy has a plastic outside wrapper and an edible inner wrapper. Cost Plus World Market carries it and my kids are…well…obsessed with it. Apparently I’ve passed the love on to them.
{reply}
French Burnt Peanuts – peanuts in beady red candy coating.
Smoothies – like a Reese’s but with a butterscotch coating. YUM.
{reply}
i can’t think of anything that i can’t get now!! probably yoohoo, but i still find that in stores. i love it. my dad used to pick me up every day after summer camp in his old beatup ghetto ‘boat’ car, that he was ‘fixing up,’ and we’d stop at the gas station and he’d buy me a yoo hoo. i’d drink it and then promptly fall asleep on the ride home. every day. one of my favorite memories.
and hello? hershey pa? i totally went there. and LOVED IT. hershey park is AWESOME.
{reply}
Chuckles-I can still find them sometimes. I always ate them in the same order and saved the black for last. Will have to check out Jungle Jims sometime-when the snow melts up here in Norwalk OH.
{reply}
For me it is, pixy sticks, wax lips, pumpkin seeds, hot dog bubble gum, and chico sticks.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
