Culinary Crapstorm…

Last night was interesting. Culinarily speaking…It was just plain weird.

Ava Beans took it upon herself to find her own dinner. She’s a big girl now and we’re trying to let her make more decisions on her own. She found something in the cabinet that caught her eye and we couldn’t convince her that it was not going to be something she wanted. Here’s a video of what happened, but before you view it, I want you to recognize that my 2-year old uses the right adjectives the right places way more than I think she should be able to. Enjoy:

Ava Loves Anchovies from Ryan Detzel on Vimeo.

Shortly after this Anchovy event, our power kept going on and off while I was trying to make dinner. We had a 50+mph windstorm going on and the power just kept flickering…it was highly annoying. I had something warming in the oven and somewhere in the process of power-flickering, the oven decided that it was going to crank on the high broiler without my knowledge.

I have no idea how long it was on…but I smelled it when it was engulfed in flames. The inside of the oven was roaring with fire and I couldn’t open it…that would just feed the flames. So this was the aftermath:

Anyone wish to GUESS THAT MESS?? I’ll reveal the true identity of that black tar later on tonight in the form of a comment.

Say, why don't you post a comment, subscribe via RSS, or follow me on twitter?

  5. wynk says:

    definitely bacon.

And if it makes you feel any better, my husband decided to fry chicken the other day and then got on the phone and forgot about the oil he had left on high. It hit the smoke point and filled the house with awful burnt oil smoke. It’s been a week and it still reeks.

That’s totally chicken fingers. I could see bacon, too, but I try to avoid bandwagons. :) Have fun cleaning the oven.

Ava’s awesome. I can see why the pretty yellow tin might not be congruent with the contents. Poor thing.

  16. Hannah says:

She is so cute! We do the same thing with ours when they have their mind set on something- total learning experience.

Gunna say bacon as I have done something similar. It looks like it was wrapped around something?

  17. I’m thinking those blobs are hotdogs. I prefer my hotdogs burnt, but I can’t say I like them _that_ well done.

I watched your video with my 17 month old little brother. He said “MMMMMMMMMMM” (his universal word for food that he wants) when he saw you open the anchovies. lol. Ava is a doll

    Hot dogs! :)

  24. The Dan says:

Ok, first of all, who cooks hot dogs in the oven? I don’t think that that’s bacon. I like to think that I know what burnt bacon looks like. Although that would explain the flames. I’m going to guess that that burnt part is cheese. I’m going to guess the rest was some sort of chicken.

  25. neonmouse says:

Ava is too cute!! Poor thing. Looks like asparagus? That totally stinks, sorry for your situation, hope you found something else (non-disgusting per Ava) to eat.

  27. MommyAmy says:

My guess is chicken of some sort. Bacon would be shriveled up much smaller after a fire. At least that’s what I”m thinkin’.

I’m SO glad Ava didn’t try the “little fishies”. I was on edge through the whole clip thinking “Please don’t taste it!”
