Your name reminds me of a great woman named Corrie ten Boom.

ten-Boom_Corrie

Corrie ten Boom was a Holocaust survivor who helped many people escape the Nazis during World War II. She experienced persecution more than most could imagine, but still taught the Gospel of Jesus and what it means to forgive to those she was helping.

From Wikipedia:

“In May 1942, a well dressed woman came to the Ten Boom door with a suitcase in hand. Nervously, she told Ten Boom that she was a Jew and that her husband had been arrested several months before, and her son had gone into hiding. Occupation authorities had recently visited her, and she was too fearful to return home. After hearing about how the Ten Booms had helped their Jewish neighbors, the Weils, she asked if she might stay with them, and Corrie ten Boom’s father readily agreed. A devoted reader of the Old Testament, Casper ten Boom believed Jews were indeed “the chosen,” and told the woman, “In this household, God’s people are always welcome.”

Corrie had been quoted as saying,

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

“Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.”

“Let God’s promises shine on your problems.”

What an amazing woman.

Wow, Ryan, Thanks for posting this post!!!

I have not thought of her for a few years. I have never seen a picture of her and always woundered what she looked like; maybe because of her name or I just couldn’t imagine her looks.

For years I listened to Liz Elliot at 11:30 am during the week on our local radio station. She would often talk about Ten Boom. Also, Elisebeth would give me the “what for and the how come” before my husband would come home for lunch. I really struggled in the early years of my life and marrage; Now, I am not where I belive God wants me, but I am a LOOOONG way from where I was, Praise God!!!!

I am not sure there is any point to this comment. Maybe it is just to tell you “Thanks for the healing through your posts”.

I Love it that Christ loves me so much that he brings people into my life, even though I have not met you, to heal me. (He has used Ree also to heal soooooo many parts of my life.) Thanks for posting and not being afraid of being the person Christ came for!!!!!

Have a Blessed day and Blessings to your family!!!!

Wow. I love to read your blog daily and see how random things in your every day life remind you of God, or of His magnificence. Thank you for teaching me about Corrie. It just reminds me that God loves every single human, not just “His followers”, and wants them all to be happy through Him. God would welcome everyone into His home, as Casper did, without judgment of their life or decisions. My friend and I just had a conversation about that this morning, and your post was the Holy Spirit reinforcing it for me.

I love that the Ten Boom sisters quoted (in the concentration camps) to other prisoners….”No pit is so deep that God is not deeper still.” So true and powerful.

Made extra special by the post on Corrie Ten Boom.

I am a naturalized citizen of the United States, having been born in Corrie Ten Boom’s home country of the Netherlands. My parents were very young during the war, but as you can imagine there are many stories passed down from their parents and others. My father’s parents are honored in Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial to the righteous non-Jews who aided their Jewish friends, neighbors and sometimes strangers.

I read with great interest the ‘Hiding Place’ story; for history of my country but also for more on this amazing Ten Boom family.

One of my favorite passages in this book is when the sister reminds Corrie to be thankful for the fleas that infested their bunkhouse in the camp. Corrie lost her patience and demanded why in the world would anyone be thankful for the biting fleas. And her sister remarked the guards are afraid of catching them, so they do not cross the threshold of the bunkhouse and so the women have a small respite from the guards’ constant watchfulness.

Corrie Ten Boom is a woman of strength and beauty of soul. Thank you Ryan for reminding us all of her !

Thank you for all the congratulations from the readers.

    Joy to you!

I first read The Hiding Place in elementary school (about 25 years ago–ouch), and I continue to re-read it every couple of years. How wonderful to be reminded that God is our hiding place during times of trouble.

Loved that book and movie and read it about 20 times in my youth. Still to this day I remember to “give thanks in ALL things” because of the flea story…or was it lice? Either way, it makes me to remember to give thanks in ALL circumstances. Ya never know what God is up to!

Interesting that you bring her up now, as I’m in the middle of a research paper about the Holocaust. I should pull out her book.
