I’m reading a book called The Divine Commodity and it’s really good so far.
I’m not very far into it yet, but it might be having the opposite effect of what it’s supposed to be having on me. It’s making me want stuff. Well…it’s probably not making me want stuff, I just always want stuff and I happen to be reading a book about consumerism.
My list has grown shorter though…and some of the items on it are less selfish than they once were.
Here’s some stuff I want:
* Nikon 70-200 f/2.8VR – This is the lens that helps you leap over to the pro side of photography. Yes, it costs more that almost every car I’ve ever owned. ($1,650)
* Nikon 60mm AF-S Micro – This lens will focus seriously close to…well…anything. And I want it!! ($550)
– Why must I have this filet mignon taste with a hamburger budget?
* Dreadlocks! I want them but I have no patience to grow out my hair. It gets crazy afro-style. Hmm.
* A commune! I want to have even more people live with us than just Ryan and Carrie. I would like to have maybe 2 or 3 more people here at our house…but that would mean some serious structure and renovations.
* A 6+ burner gas range! I want to cook more than our little glass top electric stove can handle. I feel like I’m stuck at a certain culinary level until I can move to gas. I want to feed more peeps!
What are you wanting these days?

Just a MAC but it’s not in our budget right now
That’s all…oh and an 85mm lense that would be nice too.
{reply}
That’s some interesting stuff to want.
Hmmm…I would like to have an iPhone. Then I’ll be complete…for a little while anyway.
{reply}
a house. and for our church to hire my husband full time as the young adults pastor.
{reply}
I would love to have an IPOD! I have wanted one for so long. Also a Cuisinart food processor so that I can whip up yummy things. A new car, I have had 3 used cars, and would love to finally make the step to buying a new one. I am thinking an Escalade would be a prety nice ride.
{reply}
I want to go to Germany to visit my 7 year old grandson. I want my kids to be happy. I want my air conditioner in my house fixed. I want to lose weight.
{reply}
A new computer for school, which I just started. My poor beast can’t quite keep up these days. I want to be out of debt too, but that’s coming slowly but surely.
A nice macro lens for my Rebel XT would be pretty keen.
Ultimately I want to have a good-sized piece of land and have a commune based on Hobbiton, and a bed & breakfast, and be totally off the grid (except for the internet!) … but that want’s a few years down the road
{reply}
Strangely I can never think of anything that I want. Hmmmmm.
If you want a 6+ burner gas range give me the specs on what you are looking for and I’ll let you know when I come upon one. I can probably get you an amazing deal on a used one out of a restaurant.
{reply}
Don’t do the dreads. I like your short hair. I am wanting a new lens for my Nikon. I am just starting out and learning. I want you to blog about your camera, lens, anything about your photography. If you were going to get one good lens on a beer budget, what would it be?
{reply}
I really want a netbook for my upcoming summer trips.
{reply}
Well my more practical wants would include wood floors to replace the 2 foot long hole of destroyed carpet in my living room, courtesy of my dogs, and more furniture so I feel like I can actually have people over. My husband and I have been married for 2 years and we both have a huge problem with hoarding our money. We never buy anything even if we have the cash for it. We just save and save and save and subsequently we are both really itching to spend some serious cash now. Who knows, maybe in the next month we’ll furnish our house.
{reply}
I always think of myself as not very want-y, but when I’m presented with a question like this, I can always think of things that I want. Need. Must have now.
I think I’m going to write a blog post about this. I’ll give you credit for inspiring me.
{reply}
For exams to be over. They will be later today, but the 4 hours between me and freedom feel insurmountable right now. Also, a KitchenAid stand mixer, which as a college student is totally ridiculous.
{reply}
I want dreads too… but have never been able to have them since I’m in a military like organisation. Stupid uniformity!
I also want a permanent job. Or a few part-time jobs instead of a full-time temp one.
To fall in love. More than anything I want this.
{reply}
Even though I am not a ‘things’ person and would rather do something than have something, I can’t lie that I would love to blow some money on new clothes since I have been losing weight. New running shoes, a heart rate monitor, new boxing gloves and cute summer dresses…
I relate to the filet mignon taste on a hamburger budget- and wanting a 6 burner gas stove! Sigh.
{reply}
A big square fabric ottoman. A new laptop so I can save what little back I have left. And to lose 25lbs.
Not much at all.
{reply}
I have been wanting a new computer lately. I am trying to figure out how to make it a need.
{reply}
You want the perfect lenses. You will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the 2.8…and then start wanting the 1.8
I’m so close to getting my 70-200mm IS f/2.8 I can taste it. Just in time for wedding season!
{reply}
Loving the camera lenses!
We just bought a Nikkor AF-S VR 105mm micro and we love it!
I think thhe 2.8 is next on our list of lenses to purchase.
{reply}
I don’t want a commune…FYI. Hmmm….I’d love a master bathroom- a little out of our budget too:)
{reply}
We have no extra money, so I haven’t thought about buying anything for a long time.
What I want is beyond having enough money. We want a baby and for my husband’s home in Kentucky to sell. (Any one want a 1-bedroom, 2-bath log cabin on 13 acres in Eastern KY?) We’ve been praying for these for over a year now. We’ve gotten more patient as time has gone on without getting what we want though. That’s all God. I think in most cases I’d be more impatient.
Oh wait, I want diamond earrings someday. Kinda forgot about that.
{reply}
Hmm, that’s a good question. Actually a question bugging the people around me. It’s my birthday this weekend and no one has any idea what to get me since I don’t really know what I want.
Is that a bad or a good thing?
{reply}
For myself I would love a Kindle. Oh would I love a Kindle. Someday.
For my honey. I would love for him to be able to find a job. His company went out of business in November and he hasn’t had one single bite yet. His unemployment runs out soon and I am scared to death.
{reply}
I love Ken Rockwell! His was the first site that I ever made a donation to. I can blame – I mean thank – him for the 5d I bought that makes getting out of bed worthwhile.
I too have lens lust. Since I only have 1 1/2 good lenses my list is long. And likely to remain a pipe dream for even longer.
{reply}
A fence for the yard.
A truck for my husband.
A KitchenAid stand mixer.
Money to send my kids to more camps this summer.
{reply}
Okay I hate to put any fuel one the fire but few months ago I go the Nikon 60mm AF-S Micro lens for myself and ummmmmm yeah it’s the most amazing thing I have ever added to my collection.
{reply}
My little brother had REALLY long dreadlocks way back in the day. When he decided to cut them off, my little sister and I did the honors (like cutting tree branches off his head- they smelled, er, interesting and were tough to cut through.) One of the dreads hit the floor and my mom’s shitzu ate it. Ew. That’s what I associate with dreads.
{reply}
The list is so long, and I feel bad for that. But, since you asked…
- Mac Book
- Nikon d90
- New camera lenses (list too long to detail)
- Living room set
There. I’m purged. Wait… yeah, no. That’s it.
{reply}
Peace on earth.
Health and happiness for my family and friends.
Wisdom and willpower to continue to lose weight.
To live long enough to see my children find love and live well.
Ok, now for the consumerism stuff:
Stone patio in my back yard.
New kitchen redo.
A Toyota Highlander, hybrid (I want this BADLY)
A house on the lake in East Texas.

I’ve always loved this quote:
“But nothing can satisify the ego for long. As long as it runs your life, there are two ways of being unhappy. Not getting what you want is one. Getting what you want is the other.” -Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth.
I’ve thought about this one ALOT. It provokes peace for me. Basically telling me that I can only be happy in the PRESENT moment. I will never be happy while in want of anything. I will also not be happy once I get the desired wish. It is only in acceptance of the moment as it is now that I can be free.
Does not mean that there is never anything I am hoping to have. Just means everytime I start making my wish list I can remind myself that even if I aquire the item it won’t bring happiness. It just means I’ll have a few more possessions or possibly a different circumstance.
But I do love me some camera lenses now.
{reply}
I really want a netbook computer that will easily fit in my purse and I want a little tattoo which I will be getting tonight. It’s in honor of mom, I’ll blog about it Sunday!
{reply}
I WANT a vacation. Or is this a need?
{reply}
Am I weird or what? I don’t have desires like that.
{reply}
I wanted a new car to do the massive road trip we do every year (Texas-Canada-West Coast-Texas) … instead my hubs bought me a RV.
Odd.
{reply}
agh!!! i also want to live in/make a commune!!!
oh and i like that the picture of the commune is a red unit!!!
also, my has that same 6+ gas stove! maybe you should come to our house and test it out sometime.
and also, at the moment, im not desiring anything materialistic… AT THE MOMENT
{reply}
oh and im most definately wanting to put my hair into dreadlocks this summer!
{reply}
Paint and furniture so I can re-do Torin’s room and the new baby’s room upstairs. I want to pay someone to come install new carpet.
I want to hire a small army of men to some fix my side yard. And I want them to throw in about 2,000 square feet of sod. (Ha ha, as if)
I think that’s about it. We just got a new van, I’m stoked!!
Oh and Ryan, by the way…if you have crazy thick afro hair, you’re hair will lock up a lot faster. If you ever do it, do me a favor and do NOT twist them. Don’t be a twist-afarian.
{reply}
If you already have electric, and love to cook, you should look into INDUCTION! I moved from gas to induction, and it has been amazing. The few benefits of electric (smooth, glass surface is easy to clean), but with the fine-tuning heat of gas. You can search pros/cons, but after having switched, I do love the new technology!
{reply}
My husband to be a nicer person and for my marriage to be OK again- it’s going South.
{reply}
I want to go to South Africa! I am hoping to raise money and head there next summer to teach VBS to a group of AIDS orphans. God keeps putting it on my heart, so I’m going to obey Him!
As for material stuff, we are really trying to focus on less material stuff and more memories, but I would LOVE to have a macro lens and a diffuser for my flash.
{reply}
I’d like a computer of any sort at home and i’d like to find a way to buy or make more time to get everything done.
{reply}
I would really like to have child support paid on time. So that I could afford the necessaties of life, like food, clothes, and internet (lol on that last one). I am tired of living pay check to pay check and taking care of 3 children while there other parents have freedom and their money.
Personally I would like some plants for my yard. This is the first year that I have lived here (out of 6 years) that I couldn’t afford it. Going to buy some cheap seeds and see what I can pull off.
{reply}
I just read an article by the same author in Relevant this week. I would love to read the book too. It’s a very thought provoking subject for me.
As for me, I’d love a house of my own and a dog. An the money/time for cooking school.
{reply}
No dreads! They wouldn’t look right on you. Just my opinion!
I’m really enjoying your Honduras pics. Keep ‘em coming!
{reply}
a cuisinart and a kitchenaid. how in tarnations have i lived to the age of 45, cooked heaven knows how many meals in the 25 years i’ve been married and 21 years of mothering 3 boys and NOT owned either of these machines? it’s wrong i tell you, and possibly even criminal.
{reply}
Um, no way. I went to college with Skye Jethani. At Miami. I had no idea he was writing. Thanks for the heads up — I’ll pick up his book.
{reply}
We just moved into a new house and I would LOVE new stainless appliances and granite countertops. Someday.
Also the yard isn’t really in great shape- our goal for someday is to put in a vinyl fence and a nice swingset for the little peeps!
Someday…we are blessed by all means just having this house. Praise God!
{reply}
I want to join your commune!
{reply}
Hmmm…what do I want lately?
1. For my dad to find a good job. He’s been unemployed since September, and without health insurance, which isn’t a good thing as he’s diabetic and has some other health issues too. I worry about him every day and how he will make it.
2. For my mother in law to get in good health again. Since she moved back to Alabama to live near my SIL, her health has been poor and so she’s not the same lively woman I met when I met my husband 6 years ago.
3. Some new lenses for my camera.
4. Some self-discipline.
5. To be happy always. I think that’s what any one wants, anyway.
{reply}
I’ve been wanting dreadlocks too! I also want a couple of new lenses for my canon and I want my etsy store to do really well.
{reply}
My first post here, saw you on Ree Drummond’s site. Awesome food by the way, which I will introduce to my hubs, who is a foodie. Anyway, what I’m wanting most of all these days is either a Golden Retriever or a Labrador. We’ve had both in the past and now have only two cats who aren’t very social or affectionate. I’m lonely for the companionship and playfulness of a retriever. We’re both in our 50s. Hubs and I can’t decide once and for all if we want the job of cleaning up the yard again.
If you can somehow raise the money for your camera stuff do it! My oldest son has a Canon XTi and it is awesome! Pricey, but well worth it!
{reply}
I want to be able to fall asleep holding my mans hand and to wake up next to him in the morning. Everyday. I want both of us to die of old age together at the same time. I want our lives to be full of happiness, nature, peace, lots of babies and above all else LOVE.
I want to be in the same room as him.
I want to be in the same house as him.
I want to be in the same city as him.
I want to be in the same State as him.
I want to be in the same Country as him.
I want to be in the same Continent as him.
… But you cant always get what you want. Well at the moment anyway.
Materialistic? I want a Kindle
{reply}
Hmmm…my hubby and I often think about what “little” crazy treat would we have if we won the lottery.
He would like new socks every single day (wash and donate them to charity then)..I would like fresh laundered sheets on our bed every night
I would love to rebuild this old house to my dream house in the future..but meantime we have to leave it as Granddad lives with us (he upstairs, us in the basement)and we can’t change anything as he has alzheimers … so we enjoy our garden for now LOL
Camera lens…macro is high on the list.
