Don’t get me wrong…I think it’s a good thing. It’s impressive actually. I’m not sure when it happened, but this little girl has broken the silence in a big way. She just never. stops. talking.
Some of my favorite Ava quotes over the past couple of days have been:
Ava - “Hey Dad, do you remember when we went and stayed at the pioneer woman’s house in Okiehoma?”
Me - “Yep…I remember that.”
Ava - “That was fun.”
Me…yelling at a car in front of me while driving - “What are you doing?? Just move already!”
Ava - “Dad, who are you talking to? Your steering wheel?”
Ava - “Hey Dad, can you tell me a story about when you were a little girl?”
Me - “Sure. Once upon a time, when I was a little girl, I was a little boy. The end.”
Ava - “I don’t like that story…can you tell me an udder story?
Ava after being tucked into bed, read to, and sung songs over - “Daddy, can you sleep with me in my bed for a little while?”
Me - “Nope.”
Ava - “Why not?”
Me - “Because I don’t feel like it.”
Ava - “Oh okay, goodnight Daddy…I love you.”
Me - “I love you too babe.”
Me - “Ava stop! You can’t rub syrup into your hair.”
Ava - “But I need to get it off my hands.”
Ava - “Dad, can we listen to the King of Kings song?” - Here’s that song –>click.
The interesting thing to me is that I’m reading a great, great, great book called Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell - one chapter in the book is devoted to explaining a 10,000 hour principle. Essentially, this principle is proving in one case after another, that any expert in any field, has invested 10,000 hours of time into that particular field…leading to them being an expert. It’s true with golfers, executives, cellists, etc..
And that’s when it hit me.
I’m pretty sure Ava is going to be an expert communicator when she grows up.
Hmm…
p.s. You need to buy that book…oh man it’s good. Best I’ve read in a while.

Oh I can so relate. Jonathan hasn’t stopped talking since he learned how to 9 1/2 years ago. The kid wakes up talking and talks non stop for 14 hours a day-every day.

It’s a girl thing. Our two girls were the same way…said very similar things to what you wrote. Our boy….very quiet - still a man of few words. His sisters talk circles around him. Once when he was in middle school he asked, “Do girls EVER stop talking?”

My girls never stop talking too. My husband would love that book. Thanks for sharing.

You remember that show…”Kid’s say the darndest things”…she should have been on it. Those “Ava Quotes” were priceless and extremely amusing. Congrats on the beautiful unique and happy family. I have a little boy who, for the life of him, cannot stop making dirt bike noises. I think he will be an expert dirt bike noise maker someday!!

My favorite quote from Ava in the past few days…”Sammi your macaroni and cheese is nasty… my daddy’s is way better… he can cook anything…he’s the best.” I laughed out loud when Sammi told me this
too funny! You’ve got her spoiled with your skills.

Oh MAN does that sound familiar. My 4.5 year old is non stop too. Usually I enjoy her conversations but sometimes, especially in the car where there is no escape, the never ending noise and questions makes me insane. I don’t want to teach her to stop wondering and wanting to learn more about everything but at the same time…please…stop…saying…why!

My twins are 3 and its non stop talking from the moment they get up until their eyes close at night. Somedays it’s cool and others I feel like my ears are bleeding and I get tired of trying to answer all the questions but I do love that they are learning.

Oh my, I so remember those days!! My youngest daughter was just like that too….basically whatever thoughts entered her brain came out of her mouth. A perfect window to the soul, so to speak.
BTW, your little one is adorable!!

OK, not to be a creeper or anything, but I’ve enjoyed reading your blog for quite awhile now. My husband and I are also a young ministry couple raising our two young kids (girl and boy). Our girl is at the exact same stage- she asks nightly for us to sleep with her. We have to say that we need to check on the dog.
Also, I’m currently reading “Outliers”. Crazy.
small world!

She’s so stinkin’ cute, I can’t stands it!
Your book is actually on my list. Currently reading Max Lucado’s “Fearless”, but that one’s next.

I used to have just one talker. Now I have two.
I swear my ears hurt at the end of the day just from listening to these girls all day long!

Once they start- they will not stop- my 10 year old is a talking machine….truth be told- my dad use to call me “flapper” as a kid- I guess whe comes by it naturally!

“Okiehoma?” HAHAHAHA.
Lordy how my fellow Texans would love that.
My 7 year old daughters nick name is squawkbox. Possibly a chromosome thing.

She should meet my 3 year old, Catherine. She speaks more words in 30 minutes than the other 5 of us do all day. Praise God she has a sweet voice, most of the time.

funny and smart lil girl you have here…
my fav quote would be:
“Hey Dad, can you tell me a story about when you were a little girl?”

Ava is adorable. You’re a great writer Ryan. I love that song too… “The Revelation Song”. I love Kari Jobe’s version the best.

My 77 year old Mamma… will still tell people I came out of the womb talking…
This keeps me silent.. because she is right…

Wait until your little guy is talking. My 4 and 7 year old boys talk more than any living thing I know. And it has been confirmed by pretty much anyone that comes in contact with them. (aside from the one friend my 7 year old has that talks just as much which is why his Mom and I think they are friends) And I have been told that boys are not usually this talkative. I would like silence at times but I have to say I hope they continue to be this talkative as they go into the tween and teen years.

How beautiful.

Whahahahaha, how adorable is she!

I love that song too. Thank you for sharing your memories with us. That is such a huge little blessing you have there. She is beautiful!

My girl and my boy are constant talkers, just like I was as a kid. It’s great, but sometimes I just want to cry. I need my silences too! She is such a cutie.

That’s funny, my mom talks about when I used to say “when I grow up and be a Daddy…” and she would say “honey you are a girl, you will grow up and be a Mommy” and I would say, “ok, when I’m a Daddy…”
Glad I wasn’t the only confused kid out there, ha ha!

LOL, she is so sweet. My baby started talking early, and never stopped. He even sang in the shower, we used to laugh so hard at that.

My daughter was a motor mouth too at that age. Not anymore, she’s 15! However we had a super annoying stage that was quite trying. Anytime I said anything to her she would say “huh?” or “what?” and I would repeat myself. Then I caught on.
{reply}
Seriously, your daughter is hilarious. She looks about the same age as my Addison who the other day said to me, “mom, I don’t like kidnaps. I would rather stay awake. Well, maybe if I am REALLY tired, but mostly I like to just stay awake.” How do you respond to that?
{reply}
At least Ava pauses long enough for you to answer. My son does not do that.
And Shontell #26, when he was 4, this same son used to tell me, “I don’t really sleep at night…I just lie there quietly until morning.” (He had to be sleeping. He wasn’t talking!!!)
{reply}
My little girl doesn’t stop talking either. Some days I don’t get to have a single thought to myself! But … you need to remember (and I do, too) that they have such wonderful imaginations, and it comes out in play and out of their mouth. How they describe things, remember things to tell you, and make up their own stories. Amazing, even if a little tiring sometimes
Cheers,
Cindy
