The Brave One…

Ava’s buddy Grace got her ears pierced a few days ago. Do you know what that means?

the_brave_one

That means that Ava’s little heart and burning desire has been drastically shifted towards getting her own ears pierced. It’s been something she’s wanted for a long time, but she’s been afraid to go through with it. Until last night. Apparently hearing the news that a younger-than-you friend had the fearlessness to do the deed was her catalyst to bravery.

Last night after the ornamental mutilation occurred, our little girl was swelling with joy. She had a spring in her step, a confidence in her voice, and a lioness pride in her gaze.

Thankfully, I was at a meeting when the moment of truth took place. Allison took Ava to get her ears pierced without me…and for that I am thankful. I don’t like seeing my kids in pain – even if they’re choosing it.

If you’re brave enough to watch – Allison filmed the first piercing and Ava’s response. I teared up while watching it, but I am a total wuss. Check it out:

It’s a rite of passage… my dad didn’t let me get mine done, so I did it with my daughter. So I speak from experience that it does hurt! I think my lip might have quivered a bit when I had mine done too!!!!! :) She’s tough, though! I can tell!!!

  23. Yikes. You know, some places you can have both ears done at once. It’s much “easier.” (We did this recently, too.) Just so you know. You know, for any subsequent daughters you may have. :D

Oh Ryan. .. .I could write a sermon.

Yet God is greater! He loves our children so much more than we do, and we can trust Him ALWAYS. Praise be to God!

Awww, how cute! I also teared up looking at the quivering lip! That hurts! She’s a brave little girl! My parents made me wait until I was 12…then I got a 2nd when I was 18…and a 3rd at 24 (up in the cartilidge). Now I’m back to just the 1st. ;)

  31. Melissa says:

I can’t believe they did it one side at a time! Anywhere I have gone with kids to get their ears pierced (I am the go to girl for any of my friends who’s kids want it done since they can’t take it ;P) they have always had someone help them and done both sides at once so it’s over and done with. It does hurt at first but only for a minute and then your ears just feel hot. It’s so odd. But so worth it! You go Ava! Rock those earrings!

I was alright until her little face puffed up and eyes were shocked. Ugh! Right through the heart.

You’re just like my husband. He couldn’t be in the room when both my girls got their ears pierced. Then he scooped them away afterward, like “Bad Mommy!” Oy!

  36. JacquieLH says:

Totally cried. She was so brave/strong though! I am dreading the day I’ll have to take my little girl (assuming she wants earrings). I will be a mess.

Congratulations to Ava on her pretty earrings! :)

My mom wanted me to wait until I was 11, and she said she’d get her ears pierced with me. But she chickened out, and I ended up waiting until I was in college to get them done (using my grandma’s clip on earrings in the mean-time). My mom was still upset when she found out, lol. So glad to be done with clip-ons though… way to start Ava young ;-) .

  38. MARY says:

oh so sad for a minute there, and it hurts. I have fond memories of my 13 YR old BOY wanting and getting his done, little girl younger than Ava, screaming her head off in front of him, but he still did it! keep them clean.

  39. BrendaE says:

Oh my – how sweet. Poor little girl – you could see that lip start to come out and I don’t blame her. It does pinch pretty hard but she looks like she’s really enjoying it now that it’s over.

  40. Christina says:

Darling…make sure you apply the alcohol or whatever it is that solution is that you are supposed to use twice a day. Our daughter has bad parents (particularly a bad mom) that allowed her earrings to get rusty or something awful. Talk about brave…she wants to get them repierced!
And I mean that Ava is darling, I was not calling you darling (although I’m sure that you are). :)

  41. Amber says:

Okay, seriously…I don’t have daughters. I have three sons. My heart melted for Ava…sweet little lip just quivering and her little chin…But the pain pays off for beauty! :) God love her, what a doll!

  44. Andrea G says:

Oh such a trooper! Looked literally terrified but the willingness to suffer for beauty obviously starts young. I did both of my girls’ ears when they were infants so there was a bit of crying but not the anxiety.

But my older daughter had some bad earrings (I told her not to wear them!) that caused an infection; by the time it cleared her holes had closed. She chose to have them re-pierced when she was about 13 and she did NOT behave as well as Ava.

She did very well and looks like it was well worth it to her!

When my little girl (who is now 20) got her ears pierced at 3, they did both ears at the same time. Ava’s reaction reminded me so much of my little one. That little lip quiver that makes you just want to bawl yourself! Fighting off those tears to be a big girl isn’t easy! She did great!
