I can still remember that one Halloween when my parents brought us to the rich neighborhood to trick or treat. We sped with reckless joy from McMansion to McMansion. The homes were so close together and each one was delivering big time. It was the Gold Rush equivalent for us kids, and we were striking every time. One house gave me a candy bar I’d not seen before, an Almond Joy. What is this Almond Joy? I like almonds. I like joy. This will be a great candy bar.
I was incorrect.
My utopian candy sprint was briefly interrupted by having to stop so I could spit this disgusting, gritty coconut garbage from my mouth. There was no joy, and the almonds hardly made up for it. I specifically remember being confused by how gross this candy bar was. I wondered who on God’s green earth could possibly like such an awful flavor. Coconut…the humanity.
The same horrific thing happened a couple of years later when I made one of the worst decisions of my life. I ordered the “Tiger’s Blood” sno cone from the shaved ice shack. What I thought was a pretty gangster move on my part turned out to be red coconut flavoring poured over ice… appalling. This is when I first learned what a bait and switch really meant.
I remembered these incidents a few days ago when I was standing in line at the grocery store. It was right when I grabbed the 3rd Almond Joy from the box labeled Buy 2 get 1 free.
People change.
At this point I can’t seem to get enough…
